Vive la Downtown! Business grants available to instill a touch of ...
Whether it's flowers spilling into the street from a florist shop or sipping coffee at an outdoor cafe, the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership wants to bring a bit of Paris to the city of steel. Through a $1 million grant from the Colcom Foundation, the partnership is offering matching funds to Downtown restaurants, retailers and businesses as incentive to perk up their facades and sidewalks. The Paris to Pittsburgh program is one of two initiatives being launched by the partnership this year in a bid to add vibrancy to the heart of the Golden Triangle. It also is offering property owners loans to convert vacant or under-used upper floors into apartments in the hope of providing more affordable options for people who want to live Downtown. One of the goals of the Paris to Pittsburgh program is to make store and restaurant fronts more transparent, with large window or garage door-like openings that will allow patrons to move freely between the indoor and outdoor spaces.

They have still not come to terms with the fact that Croatia is an independent country proud of its recent victory on the battle-field against criminal aggression. Thompson is very popular among Croatians that are old enough to remember the war years in the early 1990s. And the band quickly became a natural target for Croatia's enemies. The defamation campaign is spear-headed by negative propaganda identical to the kind spread world-wide during communist Yugoslavia.

Wall Street is unsettled and as a result, people's nest eggs are not what they once were. In fact, that was the top economic worry in the AP-Ipsos poll. Fifty-nine percent said they were worried "a lot" or "some" about seeing the value of stocks and retirement investments drop. "I really dread opening my (financial) statements," Sims said. By one rough rule of thumb, a recession occurs when there are two consecutive quarters six straight months when the economy shrinks. That did not happen in the last recession, though. The economy contracted in the first quarter of 2001, turned positive in the second quarter, shrank in the third quarter and turned up again in the final quarter of that year. The National Bureau of Economic Research, the recognized arbiters for dating recessions, uses a more complicated formula.
