The Katrina of All Fences
2) Respectable Bush comprehensivist types like Chertoff want to substitute a sophisticated hi-tech "virtual fence" for the crude actual physical fence. 3) Border control types say the "virtual fence" won't work. 4) Respectable Bush comprehensivists like Chertoff in fact cut back on actual fencing, choosing the "virtual fence." 5) Where it's installed, the actual fence works. 6) Where it's installed, the "virtual fence" doesn't work . 7) Chertoff feels sorry for himself ("I thought I heard myself getting roundly criticized ... as squishy and soft"). Then you can explain to me why Chertoff still has his job. P.S.: Tammy Bruce has one unsubtle, but not implausible, explanation--Chertoff was only doing what he was supposed to do: In other words, we've all just been taken for a ride ....
Monitor listens in on neighbours; Silent intrusion exposes ...
A Pembroke senior has unexpectedly discovered that he owns a window into the private lives of some of his neighbours. Leo Ranger, who lives on Isabella Street, says he was rummaging in a cupboard when as long unused baby monitor fell out. "We must have got it when my daughter was a baby," he said. "She's almost 30 now." He said he accidentally hit the 'on' button on the device. "A while later I could hear somebody snoring," he said. "It sounded like it was in my house." Mr. Ranger lives alone with his dog. Upon further investigation, he realized that the sound was coming from the monitor. With his curiosity piqued, he took the monitor with him in his car and started cruising the neighbourhood.

The Blotter
The body of the Dripping Springs man who went missing after a kayaking accident Feb. 17 has been found about 30 miles south of the Port Aransas beach near where his kayak capsized, according to an official with the Kleberg County Police Department. Stephen Stafford, 20, was kayak fishing with a co-worker before dawn when both men decided to return to the shore, officials said. After waves capsized their kayaks, Stafford's co-worker made it to the shore, but Stafford didn't. U.S. Coast Guard officials searched for Stafford for two days, but failed to find him. Around 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Coast Guard officials in a helicopter found Stafford's body along a desolate stretch of beach at the Padre Island National Seashore. The beach is about 30 miles south of where he was reported missing, said Kleberg County police Sgt.
Hitch 'em up, move 'em out: Trail ride signals return of the rodeo
On Friday, the streets around Houston's Memorial Park resembled something out of a John Wayne movie as 13 trail rides with some 4,000 riders converged on the city for Go Texan Day and the precursor to the start of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. As is tradition, all of the trail rides converge on Memorial Park before the rodeo parade, which starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday. It's an annual celebration of all things Texas that had its beginnings 56 years ago. .
